#BookReview: Field Guide to Insects of South Africa is a great guide to scary critters

Having spent the past six months with the Field Guide to Insects of South Africa, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to any aspiring entomologist or anyone wishing to learn more about the miniature world of the most abundant group of organisms on earth.

A sighting of some oft-spotted or never-seen (or paid attention to) creepy crawlers around the house and garden caused my boys (both under 10) and I to catch the guide with a great excitement.

There’s something deeply satisfying about finding the right species and better understanding its role in the ecosystem.

It comprises:

  • vivid photographs
  • easy to read text
  • detailed accounts covering identification, biology, distribution and related species
  • a useful introduction detailing the significance, life history, collecting and photographing of insects, and
  • quick reference guides on inside covers for easy identification.
