GRANITE QUARRY – Bluegrass music will fill the halls of East Rowan High School on Saturday as the Granite Quarry Civilian Fiddlers Convention returns.
The annual event, which took a year off in 2020 due to COVID-19, will begin at 11 a.m. with hot dogs, burgers, barbecue platters and desserts sold to raise funds for the Civitan Club. Registration begins at 4 p.m. The youth competition will start 30 minutes later. Beginning of the adult competition at 7 p.m.
Admission is $ 10 for adults and free for children 12 and under attending a paying adult. East Rowan High School is located at 175 St. Lukes Church Road.
âThere is great music, a family atmosphere and it conveys the centuries-old tradition of bluegrass,â said Vivian Hopkins, event planner.
Competitors are allowed to compete in two categories, including as a member of a group and as an individual. People under the age of 16 can compete in the adult categories if they are competent. There is $ 2,400 in total cash prizes in addition to trophies and ribbons. The Don and Margaret Livengood Memorial Award goes to the most outstanding young artist. The Ralph Pennington Memorial Master Fiddler Award and miniature violin are presented to the first violinist.
Because COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 Fiddler Convention, this year’s event will honor the late David Anderson Murph Jr., who was born in Iredell County, lived in Cleveland and trained the bluegrass gospel group Gospel Plowboys. The group’s attire sets them apart from other sets: denim overalls, white shirts and red ties. A live a cappella version of the classic gospel song “What a Day That Will Be” has been viewed over 6 million times on YouTube.
There will be a special performance by the Gospel Plowboys at 6:30 p.m.
This year’s recipients are Steve and Penny Kilby, who married in 1999 and live in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. They have given music camps, private workshops and organized house concerts. In recent years, they have been judges for fiddler conventions, including the Granite Quarry convention. They also created the Alleghany Music Company. They will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
The rewards will be handed out around 8:30 p.m.
