So Armand Martin will be 103 on March 1, but I’m rounding it up!
Armand was born in Frenchville, Maine in 1919. He lives alone, he drives alone, and people in Madawaska spot him shopping by himself. Fiddlehead Tuning did a great track on Armand that shows no signs of slowing down.
When you read that Maine has one of the oldest populations in the country, you don’t often think they are contributing members of society. Many in Madawaska consider Armand a source of inspiration. He is. A WWII veteran who doesn’t look the day over 70!
When Armand left home to work, he was only 16 years old. One of the jobs he had was at Baxter State Park, putting the big boulders that are along the road. They are still there today. He is the eldest of nine children in his family. He was married twice. Both times to women named Yvette! What a beautiful boy. In an interview with Liz Morneault, he talks about Yvette breaking up with him. That’s why he joined the army!
They “picked up” again and ended up getting married!
He has five children: Gene, David, Roger, Phillip and Phyllis, Phillip’s twin sister.
Everyone always wants to know what is the secret of life for centenarians. For Armand, reading is his favorite pastime. He loves old westerns and fiction the best. He also monitors what he eats and exercises. He’s on his treadmill every day when the weather isn’t great, but he prefers to be outside walking the streets. He likes to walk at least a mile every day.
Yeah. He still drives. He will make the trips to the grocery store or the pharmacy, but he has one of his three boys (who also live in Madawaska) take it if it needs to go beyond the city. He destroyed his car 5 years ago and found himself without wheels for a while. It didn’t last long and he bought a new car at the age of 101.
With his new car, he doesn’t plan to stop driving anytime soon. A neighbor predicted he would live to be 310. Armand says he feels pretty good and isn’t ruling anything out.
