Report: Star Ocean Dev Tri-Ace Incurs Significant Tax Losses

A report in the Japanese Industry Journal gamebiz suggests that tri-Ace, developer of the ocean of stars and Valkyrie Profile series, has financial difficulties. The story is based on tri-Ace’s public financial report for the fiscal year ending June 2022. [Thanks, GSK!]

Essentially, the disclosures show that despite an operating profit of more than 171 million yen (approximately $1.18 million), project cancellations, development delays and lack of new work resulted in an overall loss of more than 684 million yen. (approximately US$4.73 million). Sales also amounted to around 1.25 billion yen (around US$8.64 million), although this figure was down 42% from the previous year. The gamebiz report suggests that tri-Ace is currently insolvent or unable to repay outstanding loans.

Although not specified in the gamebiz report, a potential source of tri-Ace’s financial troubles could be the loss of Star Ocean: Anamnesis, his mobile RPG. Square Enix shut down the game overseas in 2019 and in Japan in June 2021. Prior to that, its only notable credited projects before the next Star Ocean: Divine Force were the 2017 remaster of Star Ocean: The Last Hope and the 2018 remaster of Resonance of Fate. She is not involved in the development of this year’s program Valkyrie Elyseedeveloped by Sun.

Star Ocean: Divine Force released October 27, 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One and PC. A playable demo is available on consoles.
