It was the night before Christmas
It was the night before Christmas, when all over the house
Not a creature moved, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the fireplace neatly,
In the hope that Saint-Nicolas would be there soon.
The children were huddled in their beds,
While visions of sugared almonds danced in their heads.
And mum in her handkerchief, and me in my cap,
We had just prepared our brains for a long winter nap.
When on the lawn there was such a crash,
I jumped out of bed to see what was going on.
Far from the window I flew like lightning,
I tore the shutters and lifted the sash.
The moon on the bosom of the freshly fallen snow
Give the midday glow to the items below.
When, what should appear to my amazed eyes,
But a miniature sleigh and eight small reindeer.
With a little old driver, so quick and quick,
I knew in an instant it had to be St Nick.
Faster than the eagles their steeds they came,
And he hissed, and screamed, and called them by name!
“Now Dasher!” now, dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
Come on, Comet! Come on, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
Up to the top of the porch! up to the top of the wall!
Now go for it! Run away ! Hurry up all of you! “
Like dry leaves that, before the wild hurricane flies,
When they meet an obstacle, go up to the sky.
So up to the top of the house the couriers they stole,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St Nicholas too.
And then in the blink of an eye I heard on the roof
The prancing and kicking of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head and turned around
By the fireplace, Saint Nicholas came with a leap.
He was dressed in fur from head to toe,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ash and soot.
A bundle of toys he had thrown on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, opening his bag.
His eyes, how they sparkled! its dimples how gay it is!
Her cheeks were like roses, her nose like a cherry!
Her funny little mouth was drawn like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as snow.
The stump of a pipe he held gripped between his teeth,
And the smoke surrounded her head like a crown.
He had a large face and a small round stomach,
It shook when he laughed, like a bowl of jelly!
He was chubby and plump, a real happy old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink and a turn of the head,
Soon let me know that I had nothing to fear.
He didn’t say a word, but went straight to his job,
And filled all the stockings, then snapped around.
And putting his finger next to his nose,
And nodding his head, he stood up at the top of the fireplace!
He jumped on his sleigh, his team blew the whistle,
And they all flew away like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, before he was out of sight,
“Merry Christmas everyone a good night!”
Merry Christmas from everyone at WCAX!
